Sophie's Story

Finding the Confidence to Thrive

At 6 years old Sophie was diagnosed with Leukaemia for which she spent 2 years receiving treatment. This meant that she missed out on formative years of school and, upon her return, performed at a D level in all subjects. Becoming quiet and withdrawn, Sophie even struggled to leave her mum, Christine, at the school gate.

So Christine decided it was time to access our Learning Program. With this additional support Sophie began to catch up to her peers and try new things, giving her the confidence to thrive.

"Carmen, Sophie's tutor, is amazing and has really added to Sophie's confidence and understanding in her school work," said Christine.

Now in Year 5, Sophie is working at a sound level in all subjects. She is even working above the expected level in Creative and Performing Arts and won the school’s monologue competition. She went from the girl who wouldn’t speak to anyone, to the girl who performed in front of the whole school.

“The confidence she has gained from her tutoring has changed all aspects of her life.”

Even more thrilling, Sophie has had a complete body reset – from not walking to coming second in the National titles for Karate. With determination and a positive attitude, she has won every single competition since and is the only student at her dojo to be double graded.

Christine, who is a teacher herself, can’t stress enough the cascade effect the Learning Program has had on Sophie’s life.

A massive thank you to Greater Charitable Foundation for supporting the Learning Program over the last 2 years!
