Cohen & Cooper's Story

Their second home at Ronald McDonald House

Emily knew about Ronald McDonald House well before her boys, Cohen and Cooper, were born, both entering the world prematurely. She had known her parents received the love, care and support they needed while she and her brother faced their own life-threatening conditions when they were first born.

When Cohen was born, they were rushed from their home, seven hours away, to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital where they would receive treatment.  Over the following six months they found a safe haven for their family in the House and respite from the constant beeping and stress of the wards.

When Cooper came along, also diagnosed with multiple and rare conditions, they would continue find themselves back in the place they refer to as their second home – Ronald McDonald House.

While the family has had a difficult journey, you wouldn’t be able to be pick it when you see the kids' faces each time they visit the house. Cohen is a social butterfly who loves to prank the volunteers and staff he has grown to know over the years, while Cooper loves visiting the aviary and playing on the playground with his big brother.

“The support makes all the difference. You don’t go to bed staring at walls wondering, because there’s always someone there you can talk to. You’re not going back to a lonely, empty hotel room from a big day in hospital. You’re going home.”
