Meet Avi
In April, six-year-old Aviana was diagnosed with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and had to travel far from her Scone home to John Hunter Children’s hospital.
Ronald McDonald House has been her home ever since, with her dad Locky staying right by her side. While Avi’s mum, Nikki is keeping daily life going for her other children she regularly makes the two-hour commute to visit.
The House helps keep the family unit together, giving them some level of normality and reassurance of being so close to the hospital. Living in a hotel just wouldn’t be feasible, their “home away from home” at the House has everything the family needs and they know Avi is safe from infections as she undergoes her chemotherapy.
“This house is the lifeline for families like mine who live in remote communities. Your experiencing the worst time of your life, scared to death walking out of the hospital. To know we could be a family together at Ronald McDonald House meant the world, for us and Avi” says mum Nikki.
This September, individuals, schools, gyms, and businesses will be joining forces for the Ride for Sick Kids to provide crucial funds that will help us to keep our doors open, so we can support hundreds of other families, just like Avi's.
